Torch celebrates 50 years
Posted: 1st June 2009 by Lin Ball
Torch Trust, a Christian organsation serving blind and partially sighted people, celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this month (June 2009).
The story began when Stella and Ron Heath opened their home to blind young men and women from a training school in Surrey. They were confronted with how difficult it was for blind people to be included in church life and to have access to the Bible and other Christian books. The Heaths learned braille and recruited volunteers to help them in the work of transcribing, later moving into making audio recordings. On June 8, 1959, they formally took over a magazine for blind people called The Torch and the formative trust behind it.
TORCH TRUST, based in the UK but operating internationally, serves blind and partially sighted people:
- producing Christian literature in formats they can read;
- promoting Christian fellowship with and among them; and
- responding to their unmet personal support needs.
The aim of TORCH TRUST is to overcome sight loss as a barrier to finding personal faith in Christ and living a fulfilled Christian life.
Torch Fellowship Groups meet at 130 locations across the UK. Search our downloadable directory [link] to find the one nearest to you. TORCH TRUST also runs holidays, house parties and retreats especially for blind and partially sighted people, mostly based at their own Torch Holiday and Retreat Centre in Sussex.
TORCH TRUST produces Christian literature in audio, Braille, giant print and electronic formats. The range includes Bibles, Bible portions, daily Bible readings, scripture text calendars, hymn and song books, tactile greetings cards and magazines. The Torch Library (see the Literature page) is a free postal service giving blind and partially sighted readers access to over 3,500 Christian titles including many biographies and other bestsellers in a mix of audio cassette, DAISY disc, Braille and giant print.
Much of what TORCH TRUST does is offered free of charge to blind and partially sighted people who meet generally accepted criteria. Where a charge is made, it is simply to defray costs. We believe blind or partially sighted people should not be expected to pay substantially more for reading materials than sighted people do — even though costs of producing accessible formats are often much higher than standard print costs.
